In my opinion, AI is like double edged word. It is good and it is bad at the same time. I can help you at the same time and then again ruin your day. I have experienced it. Leaning blindly on it is a lost cause. Imagine my misery when i prepare a lecture sifting through three to four books and my student next day show up with 100% AI generated content. My belief is to use AI as a last resort. LLMs, can never replace human understanding of language. For understaning text (human languages) it is always best to rely on standard corpus and as last resort on AI.
Andrew Carnie a syntactian tested AI in its infancy by challanging it with an ambigious statement. And AI failed there.
Those familiar with discourse anlaysis know three levels of meaning.
Locutionary, Illocutionary, and Perlocutionary. So, in my opinion AI is decades too younger to undsertand the subtle difference. My advice, use AI when it is the last resort for now.
My husand has made me an app.
In English the statemnent has two layer of meaning depending on context.
My husband has turned me into an app.
My husband has made an app for me.
These subtle difference in meaning can mislead AI most of the time.
Joke aside.
My husband has really made an app for me. I am connected to internet 24/7. And when i lookup meaning i always rely on standard corpus like OALD, Cambridge, Macmillan, Collins and some other as well.
So, as of today, i agree with those people who say AI cannot replace human language. But who knows. It could be a different story tomorrow.
Happy learning!!!
