我们知道，OED最初被命名为A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles——按历史原则编订的新英语辞典，1884年初版时书名为A New English dictionary on Historical Principles: Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by The Philological Society（基于语言会所收集的材料、以历史原则编纂的新英语词典），1895年起这部词典才开始使用Oxford English Dictionary（牛津英语词典）的名字。对于这部词典我们最常说的就是它的例句是按时间顺序来排列，从最早出现一直到修订时候。其实，它的词义从整体上看，应该是这样的：从原始材料中梳理出全部的词义用法和例句，然后根据词义和用法的特点进行归纳整理，同时各个部分下面的词义、例句都按照时间来进行排列。例如come这个词，OED把的词义分成I II III IV几组（同时又在III和IV下面分别分成了i和ii）：
I.To move or travel (without reference to the point of departure or destination), and related senses.（最早的例句是eOE）
II.To move or travel away, and related senses.（最早的例句是OE）
III.To move or travel towards a place, person, or thing, or in a particular direction, and related senses.
i.With reference to self-originated movement or action.（最早的例句是eOE）
ii.Denoting passive movement, change of state, etc.（最早的例句是OE）
IV.Special uses of particular forms of the verb.
i.Special uses of the past participle. Cf. gone adj.（最早的例句是a1350）
ii.Special uses of the present participle.（最早的例句是1483）
所有的词义以这样的形式排列，看上去让人觉得条理很清晰，逻辑上也很自然。不过，如果我们做进一步的深究，就会产生困惑：这些条条块块之间是否在关联，如果有，是什么关联？如果把这些条条块块贯通起来，又会是什么样的体验？？
