Different but cognate, and there are certain grammatical rules in common, e.g., they both have accusative and dative cases. And what’s more, the original poster is an English major, and when she learns English words, she will encounter many formal words that are Latin in origin, which might also be conducive to the learning of Spanish.

just use anki, goldendict-ng already supports anki

i’m fluent in english, and i know a few english majors in my country who aren’t.
dont waste time learning latin to just then get into spanish, this sounds crazy to me.

edit: nowadays spanish has no relation with latin whatsoever.
however latin doesn’t sound so hard for us (speakers of portuguese/spanish)
but when we are talking about foreigners, it’s a different thing, they wont have the same “feeling” for it, therefore they are not that apt to recognize latin words as the natives of spanish or any other romanic language.
the “”““spanish””“” that you’re thinking is called catalan, it’s not the mainstream spanish.

I like cognate words, and that’s all. And my suggestion is for the original poster, not you, ok? The OP wanna learn Spanish from the perspective of English or Chinese, and I thought it a sheer caprice and pointed her to the learning of Latin.

how to choose between Latam and Spanish from Spain ? (i’d pick the latam, it’s harder to listen)
if you want a “easier” (not so fast) spanish, then pick the one from spain
