From the PRC-standard 《新世纪汉英词典》 (same definition also appears in 《汉英词典》and 《新时代汉英词典》). I don’t disagree about the ‘criticism’ bit, but it’s a standard translation for the word.

Honestly this may be more of an English semantic argument - thanks in part to the original '70s 《汉英词典》being copied by basically every C-E dictionary that came after it a lot of Chinese words tend to get stuck with old-fashioned English translations that miss the tone a bit.
