< the name of George Zweig (b. 1937), Russian-born U.S. physicist.
Meaning & use
Particle Physics.
1973–
Used attributively, in combinations, and in the possessive in or with reference to Zweig rulenoun (also Zweig's rule) an empirical rule governing the possible outcomes of hadron decay in quantum chromodynamics.
1973
A four point function satisfying the quark model ansatz..splits naturally into two three point functions, each satisfying Zweig's rule.

1977
With the Zweig rule, the ρπ decay mode for the physical ϕ meson is permitted only through its admixture of nonet ω state.

There is also a useful review by Lipkin of the empirical status of the so-called Zweig rule, which is supposed to inhibit the decay of the J/ψ to hadrons so strongly.

Any process where new quarks and antiquarks emerge in a way that can be cut, like figure 14.7(b), is suppressed relative to processes of the figure 14.7(a) topology. This observation has been elevated to an ad hoc rule, known as the Zweig rule or OZI rule.
Some consonants can take the function of the vowel in unstressed syllables. Where necessary, a syllabic marker diacritic is used, hence /ˈpɛtl/ but /ˈpɛtl̩i/.
