    Any of various unicellular green algae (formerly grouped in the genus Zoochlorella) which are symbionts within the cells of certain freshwater and marine invertebrates and protists. Chiefly in plural.
    Zoochlorellae are now placed in multiple genera, esp. the genus Chlorella.
