take it upon/on oneself phrase : to do something that needs to be done even though no one has asked one to do it or： to decide to do something without getting someone’s permission or approval first 孤立看Sir Herbert took it upon himself to act as chairman这个句子，个人认为难以判断准确与否。要看具体语境。 从MW的解释看，take it upon/on oneself倾向于表褒义，未被要求而主动担当起…承担起… 根据不同语境，也能表示“擅自、自作主张“的意思，ESL词典（目前只在OALD和LDOCE上看到）似乎倾向于这种。 ---

不管是主动还是擅自，翻译成亲自都不准确，亲自是说不由别人代劳，而这个词组不管是褒义还是贬义，其实都是说没有经过别人的请求或者允许。 ---

我觉得若它用“自行”是较准确的，亲自带有重视之意（ 图中该例句于“chairman”是模稜兩可）。有更多短语或习语例句来更好辨别。 ---

主要看语境。我的理解是 “亲自”除了“自己上（自己的责任义务），不由别人代劳”的意思外，也可用以表达“自己干了职责或分工上应由他人做的事” 。所以，这是个表达习惯问题，不明context下单看一句话，容易有歧义。 ---
